There are a few fetch quests, rescue missions, and combat assignments, but they’re usually relatively simple. These usually involve finding a certain number of items, catching a specific Pokemon, or filling out a Pokemon’s Pokedex page, after which you’ll receive a reward. You’ll also find Noble Pokemon fights sprinkled through the main quest that require you to calm a large, powerful Pokemon by pelting it with offerings and dodging its attacks (and usually stun it with a quick Pokemon fight in the process).īesides the main quest, you can take on dozens of side quests from villagers. This is where you’ll find the game’s few Pokemon trainer battles, fights that you can use to impress allies or thwart villains by pitting your Pokemon against theirs. The story quests are usually the most interesting aspects, because they have the most interaction with other characters and delve into the world’s lore. The main story tasks you with zig-zagging across each area, so you can get a feel for the land and the Pokemon there. This doesn’t make Pokemon Legends: Arceus a true open-world game, though like in Sword and Shield, this game's zones are discreet, and not directly connected to each other. Each area resembles Pokemon Sword and Shield’s Wild Areas, wide open sections of land where you can freely run around to encounter Pokemon and gather resources. There aren’t any direct routes like in modern Sinnoh in fact, the most you’ll find are a few dirt trails. This much more active experience is encouraged in the game’s geography. You can also hold ZL when near a Pokemon to automatically target it, but you still have to consider the range of whatever you’re throwing. Throwing Pokeballs and using items requires care: You hold ZR to ready an item to throw and display its trajectory, then release to toss it. This time, you won’t black out and wake up in a safer place if all of your Pokemon get knocked out (though you will if you end up taking too many hits yourself). If you attract unwanted attention, you can run or dodge-roll to avoid Pokemon attacks. Stealth is a big gameplay element, and the crouch button lets you stay obscured in tall grass while you stalk Pokemon. In fact, this is the preferable method of catching the many skittish Pokemon that run away at the first sign of trouble.Ī great deal of the game’s action involves directly controlling your character and only using Pokemon when needed. Sneaking through tall grass and using various items help you get the drop on these Pokemon, and if you surprise them, there’s a good chance that you can catch the critters without attacking. You can actively attempt to catch Pokemon by aiming and throwing Pokeballs directly at them without fighting them. The big differences take place outside of battle, where wild Pokemon freely wander. Although Pokemon can only bring four moves to a fight, you can swap any move they’ve learned when they're outside of battle, a function mainline Pokemon games have traditionally relegated to out-of-the-way tutors and rare items. #GUARDIAN OF LORE SWITCH REVIEW MOVIE#This lets you chose between using an Agile move (for lighter attacks that enable the Pokemon to quickly act again) or Strong movie (for heavy hits that have longer recovery times). This is made even more strategic with the ability to master moves. A fast Pokemon might be able to get two moves off before their opponent can respond. Instead of alternating turns, Pokemon now move based on their speed and the attacks they use. The combat is tweaked a bit from the usual formula, but not significantly. Few people in Hisui use them, and are instead content to have their Pokemon friends stand by them. The Pokeball itself is new technology, consisting clearly of wood and metal materials, with visible hinges and clasps. Many pocket monsters are considered helpful companions, but more often they’re seen as wild animals or guardian demigods. This all takes place centuries before the modern era Pokemon games, and the people of that time have different relationships with Pokemon. They need help, because strange phenomena have occurred across Hisui. You’re new to Hisui, and tasked with helping Professor Laventon research Pokemon, as well as aid the Diamond and Pearl clans. They play a different role in Arceus in fact, you join them as an explorer. If you’ve played Pokemon Brilliant Diamond or Shining Pearl (or the original Pokemon Diamond or Pearl), “Team Galaxy” will sound familiar, as they were those games' villains.
